  • How do I clean soft surfaces like carpets, rugs, or drapes?

Clean these items with soap and water, or use appropriate cleaners for these surfaces. If possible, launder them according to the manufacturer's instructions using the warmest water setting and dry them completely. Alternatively, disinfect with an EPA-registered disinfectant.

  • What’s the best way to clean electronics?

For electronics like tablets, touch screens, and keyboards, consider using alcohol-based wipes (at least 70% alcohol). Follow manufacturer instructions or, if unavailable, use wipes or sprays and allow the surface to dry thoroughly.

  • How should I handle laundry, especially from someone who is sick?

Wear disposable gloves when handling laundry from a sick person. Launder clothing and linens according to the manufacturer’s instructions using the warmest appropriate water setting. Dirty laundry can be washed with other items, but avoid shaking it. Clean and disinfect hampers regularly.

  • What should I do if someone in my facility is sick?

Close off areas used by the sick person and improve air circulation. Wait 24 hours before cleaning, or wait as long as possible if 24 hours isn’t feasible. Clean all areas used by the sick person, including shared electronics. If it’s been more than 7 days since the person was in the facility, additional cleaning is not required.

  • How should I protect myself during cleaning?

Wear disposable gloves and gowns for all cleaning tasks. Additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required depending on the disinfectants being used. Always wash hands with soap and water after removing gloves or contact with a sick person. Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is an alternative if soap and water are unavailable.
